S.A.E. Ström Maritime Short Story Competition

Purpose

  1. To perpetuate the memory of Miss S.A.E. Ström, OAM, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to Australian maritime affairs.

 

  1. To encourage research into Australian maritime history.

 

Requirements

 

  1. A story of about 3,000 words on an Australian maritime topic such as: ships past or present, ship personnel, port support facilities, navigation, yacht and small boat cruising, ship restoration or passenger diaries.    

                                                      

  1. The material must be factual and either based on personal experience or the outcome of personal research from original resources and / or published papers. The story may include photographs, charts or sketches to support the printed matter.

 

Prize

            The prize for the successful entry will be $250 each year.

 

Conditions

q       The fee for each entry is $A4.00
 

q       Entries must be typed and double spaced on one side of numbered A4 paper. The first page should have the title of the story, but the author's name and details should be shown on a separate accompanying sheet. It is desirable, but not essential, that the story be accompanied by a diskette with a file written in MS Word.

 

q       Entries must be submitted to The Shiplovers' Society of Victoria, PO Box 1169K, GPO, Melbourne - 3000, by 31 December of each year.


q       A panel of not less than three judges, appointed by The Shiplovers' Society of Victoria, will adjudicate. The decision of the panel will be final and no correspondence will be entered into. Where all entries for one particular year are not considered of sufficient merit to be awarded the prize no award will be made for that year. All authors will be advised of the panel's decision.


q       Authors may retain the copyright of their story, but they must permit The Shiplovers' Society of Victoria to publish selected stories, whether successful or not, in their annual publication The Dog Watch without payment of copyright fees.


q       Authors requiring their manuscript and any attachments to be returned to them must enclose a suitable stamped self addressed envelope with their entry.
